Peridots

properties

Peridot is one of the few gemstones that we will find in a single color, green. This is because it is an idiochromatic gem, because its hue comes from the basic composition of the mineral itself, not from minor impurities. This gem is also called chrysolite or olivine and is characterized by its oily and shiny appearance, similar to that of glass. The most important deposit of peridot is found in the Red Sea, on the island of Zebirget. There, the most beautiful crystals are found in the walls of holes in decaying peridotite rock. In Russia there are cut peridots from a meteorite that fell in 1749 in Eastern Siberia.
