WHICH HAND DOES THE ENGAGEMENT RING WEAR?

One of the questions you most often ask us at our jewelery store in Girona is which hand you wear the engagement ring on . It is normal to have doubts, everyone chooses the option that is most comfortable for them or the one that they have traditionally seen at home. However, we give you our five cents on which finger and on which hand one of the most important rings in a couple's life is usually worn.

On which finger and hand is the engagement ring worn?

The engagement ring is usually worn on the ring finger of the left hand . Especially in countries such as Spain, Portugal, Italy, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France... However, you must bear in mind that even within the same country, there are differences and there are those who prefer to wear it on the right hand .

In Catalonia, for example, the engagement ring is worn on the ring finger of the left hand, but then, once the wedding is celebrated, it passes to the right hand since the wedding ring is worn on the left wedding.

It is also true that there are those who continue to wear it on their left hand because it makes them happy to wear the engagement ring and the wedding ring together.

As a curiosity, countries such as Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Russia or the countries of Eastern Europe are taken to the right.

In China, the engagement ring can be worn on either hand or even hung from a chain around the neck.

At Roosik & Co we recommend that you carry it in the hand that you use least and is most comfortable for you. With our hands we do many daily activities and rings usually take a lot of hits. If you are right-handed, better to wear it in your left hand and vice versa.

Where did the tradition of wearing the engagement ring on the ring finger of the left hand come from?

The tradition of wearing the engagement ring on the ring finger of the left hand comes from an ancient Egyptian belief. And the fact is, the Egyptians thought that there was a vein (called "the vein of love") that went directly from the ring finger to the heart. A very romantic reason that justifies wearing the engagement ring on that finger, right?

Can the engagement ring be worn on the ring finger of the right hand?

Yes, and so much, even if it is not the most common. The choice of which hand to wear the engagement ring depends on each person's preferences and tastes, also on where it is most comfortable to wear it or even on aesthetics, where is it most beautiful? Perhaps there are already many symbolic rings on the left hand and you prefer to give a new, equally important place to the engagement ring on the right hand.

To sum up…

If you want to know on which hand the engagement ring is worn , we will tell you that in most countries it is worn on the left hand, but this can vary even within each region or according to individual preferences. Once married, the engagement ring usually goes on the ring finger of the right hand in many places, such as in Catalonia, and the wedding band is usually worn on the ring finger of the left hand.
